VideoTrace – 3D modelling using real video

by 3D jon

videotrace is a system for interactively generating realistic 3D models of objects from video—models that might be inserted into a video game, a simulation environment, or another video sequence. The user interacts with videotrace by tracing the shape of the object to be modelled over one or more frames of the video. By interpreting the sketch drawn by the user in light of 3D information obtained from computer vision techniques, a small number of simple 2D interactions can be used to generate a realistic 3D model. Each of the sketching operations in videotrace provides an intuitive and powerful means of modelling shape from video, and executes quickly enough to be used interactively. Immediate feedback allows the user to model rapidly those parts of the scene which are of interest and to the level of detail required. The combination of automated and manual reconstruction allows videotrace to model parts of the scene not visible, and to succeed in cases where purely automated approaches would fail..

@Popshotdude ….what program is this? Are you serious? Did we just watch the same video and read the same meta data? …gesh… He says the name about fifty times!

  2. Tovicladiesmen777

    yeah what program is it?

  3. Patrick128000

    That is truly amazing

  4. onzki

wow- I’m curious what happens with lighting, does it clone the video or becomes independent?

  5. Popshotdude

wow can i turn this model or any model into a 3d game? also what program is this?1!

hobophobik, I guess normals are not that hard thing to get here, because every time you draw a triangle it assumes the normal as positive. I guess.

Gandalf made this program. The metrics file simply says “Gandalf was here”.

im waiting for the day that they use like an infrared distance counter on there as well so it maps out the depths of the target object its pointed at, and is automatically implemented to give instant and more accurate shaping.

Tres cool. Beauty of this system is that you get th’ texture from th’ video footage as well an’ there’s no need for a UV mapping stage. Admittedly it’s going to need touching up, but for quickly getting content into a 3D system this is absolutely amazing ..

It looks like you take standard 2D video footage and begin by drawing on an initial frame. I imagine some motion tracking is used to recalculate the new position of visible vertexes as you progress through the frames. How they determine the normal of each polygon and the position of the camera is a little bit beyond me… I’ll put that down to clever maths, or magic.

    “JAW DROP”

  12. thetaconaiter

    where do you get this

  13. crazyjack41

WOW that looks so easy… what file formats will you be able to export the model as?

  14. Mikxels

    that’s freakin awesome dude

  15. zotigertiger

    That’s awesome.

  16. DamianProgrammer

Where can i get this program?

Im not a little kid ur just a fucking prick

And i dont think ur mom wud fuck an underage kid now wud she

  18. oneeyedgeek

I’m guessing you lied about your age to get a youtube account, didn’t you?

I hate chatting with little kids, so good bye.

  19. wildcog

No actually YOUR mom came up with it while i was fucking her wen u were in the bedroom next door

Well from this line “3D information obtained from computer vision techniques” implies to me that some kind of pre process was used before hand. I assumed that was some form of traditional camera tracking.
You need a camera to be able to view the 3d, it doesn’t just appear by magic does it Chris.
Judging from your smarmy comment then if it’s all done from the video it calculates the camera position from some kind of optical flow system?

Nice reply. Did you think of it all by yourself, or did your mommy help you?

(and to others who read this, Dummy’s reply was so bad someone removed it, lol)

  22. VelociralexBojarzin

This is cool, I must say.

    Now do a human body.

    Hey FUCK YOU!

Nothing like Aussie know-how to confuse and confound TROTW. Ha! Fake! Hahahahah.

Yes, it _has_ been around since COMSOL 2007, and yes, it _has_ been heavily edited so people with ultrashort attention spans don’t accidentally fall asleep if a scene isn’t changed in less than 4 zzzzzzz……:)
If you liked this, go have a look at the comsol site and see the other cool (pun intended) stuff.
Or check out the fake Punchard site with the fake turorials on the fake internet.
