Basically it’s stereoscopic, video is coming from two or more sources to give it a more realistic sense of depth. The only types currently produced require you to either be sitting at one precise location at a certain distance away from the TV, or to wear 3D glasses, in order to view the content properly. The technology only really works on very large screens.

Will it be successful? That remains to be seen, but I would be neither surprised nor disappointed if it flops.

Actually a couple of surveys have been done by the companies involved with 3d. They did this before 3d movies really started coming out in theaters and then more recently with televisions. The results are the same for tv that they were for 3d theatrical releases. About 65% of people would buy a 3d television set. It did well at the box office so probably will do well in the home as well because of similar survey results. Well enough for there to be a decent amount of home content in a few years.
