Anyone know how to change the convergence chip(s) in a Magnavox 51mp39H rear projection tv?

by 3D G33K

I am having some real issues with my television set, I recently turned it on and out of the blue the convergence was off. The screen looks like you’re watching a 3D movie without the glasses on, it imediately gives you one hell of a headache. I narrowed it down online to an issue with the convergence chips and it seems like an easy job once you know were the original chips are in the set. Unfortunately I have no idea. If anyone could help me out with a blueprint of the circuitry or directions on the swap I would be very greatful. Thanks a million, E.

  1. TV TECH-manĀ®

    Look for the STK392-120’s

Then BUY a good temperature controlled soldering iron…you’ll lift/destroy the copper pads on the board if you don’t…They’re about $150 for a Weller.

Then get a spool of Solder Wick…not the cheap stuff, the cheap stuff makes you sit on the copper pads too long and the pads lift and break…A good spool of Chemwick is about $10, use the Chemwick LiteĀ® and the 0.10 inch size.

    THEN get a spool of 63/37 Eutectic solder….NOT 60/40 !
60/40 solder goes from liquid to to Solid…and you can create BAD SOLDER JOINTS in that range….
And yes, it can damage the copper pads…..

Those pads are very small….VERY CLOSE to each other. YOU CANNOT Bridge ANY of those pads….you will destroy the Amp, and the copper Pad, and POSSIBLY the Convergence generator board’s outputs…..

You’ll WANT a bright light and a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loupe to closely inspect your solder for ANY bridging….

And you’ll need HEAT sink compound too….

Let’s see….LOUPE and HEAT Sink compound and SOLDER and what else ?

    Another $60……NOPE, $80 to $85 with the EUTECTIC solder….

So you got $85….$235…..$245 for equipment.

And if you damage the copper trails, then you NEED a technician to repair them for you…..
A TECH will charge about $200 to fix them.

You can have a TECH do the whole job for $300 up to $380 depending on where you live….
And if he damages the copper trails, HE can fix it!

You don’t want to damage those copper trails…they’re a NIGHTMARE to repair.
But, a properly equipped TV TECH does have this equipment ……

What nobody tells you is WHAT brand and model they’re working on..so it always SOUNDS EASY….but the TRAILS are thin thin thin on these units.
