Essentially the way 3D works is by having each of your eyes receive different images that are at slightly different angles. This creates the illusion of depth. To get an idea of how this works, focus on an object 15-20 feet directly in front of you. Cover one eye with your hand. Now switch eyes and you’ll notice that you see the object for a slightly different angle.

The old anaglyph 3D worked by having two sets of images projected on screen at one time. The colors for each image were different and the color filter over each eye blocked one set of images – or more specifically made one set invisible because it was the same colors as the lens over that eye.

The newer 3D technology uses polarized glasses. Because you are not placing a color filter in front of your eyes, this allows for better color and usually creates less eye strain. Also, rather than seeing one image that is split into different colors, the projected images alternate so each eye is seeing a full image while the glasses block the image from the other eye. Then the next frame is seen by the second eye. You can get a sense of how this works by quickly moving your hand back and forth covering one eye at a time.

As far as how the images pop out of the screen this is how that works. In real life when something like your finger is 4 inches in front of your nose and you look at it your eyes have to cross. For something across the room your eyes uncross and your tunnel of vision becomes more parallel. So for 3d movies we need to give each eye a different viewing angle and we need to get your eyes to cross and uncross to make things look close and far away.

In the 3d movie there is double images of everything which can be accieved thore different techniques one of which is to use a camera with two lenses spaced apart like your eyes and filming both of them at once. Now we project both films on the screen and get one film to the left eye and one film to the right eye with the glasses.

Now here is how we get your eyes to cross. When something is far away the image for the left eye is on the left side and the image for the right eye is on the right side, your eyes are uncrossed. Now as the image gets closer the double images get closer together and overlap looking like one image. Now the double images pull apart again but this time the image for the left eye moves to the right side and the image for the right eye moves to the left side, your eyes begin to cross. The further apart they get the more the image seems to pop of the screen.

They can contorl how far things go behind and in front of the screen. For current 3d releases they don’t make things come toward you that much. The most I have seen something pop out is the Muppets 3d film at MGM studios at Disney World In Florida, really cool if you ever have the chance to see it. They tone it down just a little for current theater releases.
