Published!: Google SketchUp for Game Design

Birmingham, UK (PRWEB) December 07, 2011

Packt recently published its second book on Google SketchUp titled, “Google SketchUp for Game Design: Beginner’s Guide.” Through this book, author Robin de Jongh leads the beginner through the creation of a realistic 3D game world, complete with textures, levels, and props. The book shows newcomers to game development how to import their game art to game engines such as Unity 3D, alongside advice on how to sell low polygon 3D objects in game asset stores. There is also detailed guidance on photo-texturing models for ultra realism.

SketchUp is a hugely popular 3D modeling program marketed by Google and originally designed for architectural, civil, and mechanical engineers. Due to its ease of use and powerful tools, it is increasingly adopted by filmmakers and game developers. In 2006, Google announced the free to download version of Google SketchUp. The program, which is designed for ease of use, even allows for the placement of 3D models within Google Earth. Google’s 3D Warehouse enables SketchUp users to search for, download and contribute free models.

Google SketchUp for Game Design: Beginner’s Guide provides readers with simple steps to model realistic 3D environments, levels and props with SketchUp and Unity 3D. Readers will learn how to create cars, buildings, terrain, tools and the ubiquitous kind of props found in every 3D game, such as barrels, fencing and wooden pallets. The book acts as an aid in setting up a game level in Unity 3D creating a fully functional first person walk-around level.

The book enables designers to create ‘game ready’ textures from photos, discover tools for game-level and asset creation, and sculpt rough terrains using easy Sandbox tools in SketchUp. This beginner’s guide takes the reader through modeling a 3D automobile with advanced tricks and techniques, adding lighting, and enabling anyone to walk around in their game level. The techniques learned in the book can be applied to importing one’s game art into any freely available professional game engine like Unity 3D, Panda3D, Ogre, CryENGINE, Unreal Development Kit and Blender Game Engine.

The book is written for anyone who wants to create entire 3D worlds to play online or install on a PC or Mac. It also targets people who wish to create new levels and assets to sell in game asset stores, or to use in visualization or computer animation. For complete information about the book, please visit Packt’s site.

Question by : How do you create 3D animation video games?
How do you create 3D animation video games? I need a program that creates RPG video games. I would like to create video games similar to World of Warcraft and Runescape. I would like it if the graphics are good and the program is easy to use. I also need the program to be a low price or if possible free. I already know the program “Blender” but is there any better programs for free? Also would I need a collage education in Computer graphics to create video games or do I just need to know how to use the program?

Best answer:

Answer by caleb
lol, I was actually gona say Blender. I used to know of some programs that you might be able to use… but I forgot what they were called.
Check this site out and see if you can find something: http://sourceforge.net/
Anyway, I can tell you now you won’t make anything that compares to Runescape, and especially WoW. Unless you’ve got a whole lot of time, patience, and the ability to learn constantly, to actually make it into a MMO type game, you’ll need even more knowledge, a lot more.

Question by ssupersspartan33: Where can I find good pictures to use to create 3d models of various types of people?
I’m looking for those pictures that you see at like side and front view, or even more, that I could use to create a 3d model of. I’d like a young fit male teenager (I’d use myself but I’m too fat -.-), a female one, and some adults (male and female), and have no idea where to find them. Several google searches are to no avail.

Best answer:

Answer by ronnie f
Your best bet is to either draw the figures in those perspectives, get someone else to draw it, or take photos yourself of people.

Finding exact poses online of an exact figure type can be daunting.

Question by Manolito: What is the best unique 3d game I need to create if i will choose game development for my thesis?
I will be having my thesis next semester and I will use unity 3d for my platform in creating my game, autodesk maya for my 3d models, and adobe photoshop for its texture. I will need a lot of unique ideas for creating a game that was not existing yet.

Best answer:

Answer by AbakeLite
Unity3d is too much expensive. Anyway all the games are already made – and played. Now you can only change the environment – ‘world’. Theme is same.

I’m sure whoever has been seeing my videos for a while can remember my FPS Tutorials on Unity 3D. Well, since i’ve run out of ideas of sequels for the FPS tutorial series, i’ve switched to create tutorials on making a 3rd Person video game in Unity 3D, the free game engine. For those who don’t know, Unity 3D is a free game engine where you can create your own 3D games easily and for free. You can check out more information here – unity3d.com If you are interested, you can upgrade to the PRO version which has real-time shadows and graphic enhancements and loads of more features but it will come at a large price. So, i’ve switched to the 3rd Person tutorials because my game, Lost Worlds, is now being switched to 3rd Person Mode. So i decided to make a tutorial on it as well This also includes another tutorial on how to import your rigged-character from 3Ds Max into Unity 3D. I’l show you in 3Ds Max some fixes and adjustments you’ll need to make before importing your character into Unity 3D. By the way, for your convenience, i’ve created a read-made package which includes a ready-made player, ready to be used with Unity 3D, to get started with you 3rd Person game without anything to worry. The package also includes a 3rd Person script thanks to Unity Wiki for use with your 3rd Person model as well, as well as a stock player model if you want to learn on your own. The best part is, it’s free. Download the package here – www.mediafire.com Once you are ready, import the package …

Durham, NC (PRWEB) November 22, 2010

3DMedia Corporation recently released version 2.0 of its PC software product, 3DComposer. 3DComposer is a tool that allows users to create 3D photos using their existing digital cameras. These 3D photos can be displayed on 3D-capable computer monitors or TVs. 3DComposer is designed to be very simple to use, so even novice photographers can easily create 3D images. “We believe giving consumers the power to create their own 3D content will inspire them to embrace 3D technology,” said Jason Hurst, General Manager of PC Products at 3DMedia. “This release underscores 3DMedia’s continued commitment to delivering the highest quality 3D creation technology.” A free trial of the 3DComposer software can be downloaded at 3dcomposer.com.

3D TVs and PCs are arriving in the market in greater numbers, but many potential buyers find the limited 3D content that is currently available to be a deal breaker. The number of 3D movie titles available on Blu-ray is still fairly small, and there have been only a few 3D broadcasts. Converting 2D content to 3D has been unsatisfying for many viewers due to the relatively poor image quality. Although video provides the ultimate 3D experience, personal 3D video will take years to reach target quality levels. However, consumers can create high-quality, fully immersive 3D today via 3D photography, which has generated a surge of interest. “3D photographs provide an engaging viewing experience, and 3D creates new possibilities for photographers at any skill level,” said Hurst. “Creating high-quality 3D pictures gives people another way to enjoy their 3D HDTV or PC, and is possible even using standard cameras.” 3DMedia’s technologies can also be licensed for incorporating into consumer electronics devices such as cameras, mobile phones, and HDTVs to create 3D-capable products. 3DMedia offers technologies that can be embedded in cameras to make the process of taking 3D pictures even easier. Enabling consumers to create 3D content using their existing cameras will help to quickly generate large amounts of content and further solidify 3D as the preferred way to view images and videos in the future.

Version 2.0 of 3DComposer includes many additional features and enhancements. It now comes packaged with 3DMediaViewer, which is a PC application that allows users to view 3D photos created with 3DComposer on their 3D-capable monitors. 3DComposer can now create 3D image files in MPO format for compatibility with some HDTVs and other viewing applications. 3DComposer version 2.0 includes advanced 3D creation capabilities that improve the quality of the 3D experience.

About 3DMedia:

3DMedia Corporation develops technologies to create, view, and distribute 3D content. 3DMedia’s technologies address the problem of 3D content generation, which is by all accounts the biggest obstacle to consumer adoption of 3D. These 3D technologies are available for licensing and incorporation into consumer products such as cameras, mobile phones, HDTVs, and PCs. By providing users with the means to experience and control high-quality 3D content, 3DMedia’s technologies are a key enabler for the proliferation of 3D products in the consumer market.
