Is it a million dollar question or absolutely a worthless point to discuss? I am literally not convinced about the fact that 3D movies will prosper with the same success. Though the 3D technology is actually rotating the whole cinema world especially after James Cameron’s Avatar being the highest grossing film of all times but surely it’s a new toy for Hollywood and each one is experimenting with it.

Nowadays people of all genres are eager to watch new movies particularly the ones which are converted into 3D or are really directed in 3D. And every time we forget that there is a big difference between the movies created in 3D and the movies transformed in 3D, no doubt that 3D can actually give you an awe feel and your complete movie experience is heightened by the big silver screen. But did we ever gave it a thought that if we extract 3D technology from the movies are we still left with good narration, fantastic direction and commendable acting skills? The answer to this question will definitely be a big NO, why because 3D effect is the only thing that wows us all else we are left with nothing more than middling questionable script, humdrum direction and gimmicky artists.

But regardless of this fact people enjoy watching 3D movies and the CGI will surely prosper in times to come. Unfortunately with all the facts discussed above, there are some strengthening specialties that have taken 3D technology to a greater height of success and there is more to come in the future. The 3D technology crafts more life in the storytelling and the lively feel of aura is attached on the screen rendering a real experience. The characters in the movie also seem to be truly alive and full of sprightliness. People enjoy 3D cinema because of its distinctive appeal something that is not captured in everyday life like interacting animals, singing pigeons, flying creatures and bonding between different species etc. Animated movies are giving a tough competition to the classic cinema of real stars and they are affected by the invention of 3D technology in movies.

Another very essential reason why the 3D movies will prosper in the coming future is the growth in the number of audiences. All are getting crazier day by day and so many more movies are either created in 3D or are being converted into the same. Creating animated flicks is the latest trend catching up in Hollywood and they are no more considered only for children coz the adults too enjoy them a lot. The 3D moves actually allow the audience to connect deeply with the characters. Even the producers and distributors are meeting with incredible success through the animation technology. And therefore it’s quite difficult to predict whether 3D movies are just for few more years or the impressive 3D technique is here to rule the cinema forever?

People, old enough to remember the last time round, are sure to dismiss this as just another flash in the pan. How wrong could they be…this time 3D is coming with the whole entourage. Real 3D DVD with a 3D DVD player to play them on along with the 3D TV systems, oh yes, and those 3D glasses – but not as you know them Jim!

You can take this as gospel, 3D is here again. But this time round it is not just for the cinema as 3d tv systems will allow real 3d dvd to be played on your very own 3d dvd player and all from the comfort of your own armchair.

Even though the technology can be dated back to the start of the last century, it has not always enjoyed a good press. Some of the movies released in three dimension where frankly rubbish and to a certain point this killed any chance of it becoming main stream–though if you ask some they would maintain it was those appalling 3D glasses that put the final nail in the coffin.

So what has changed? It really stems to the technology being thrust back into the limelight, over the last couple of years, by recent Hollywood block busters and Disney productions. This has been galvanized by the massive success of Avatar, released in three dimension, becoming the highest grossing film of all time. But Avatar was just one of 17 3D movies in 2009 with at least another 12 already planned for 2010.

The speed of which the biggest players in the consumer electronics industry have jumped on this, and brought the technology to the point of release, has been nothing short of staggering. It seems the only thing that has been holding the mass launch going ahead has been the content; a lack of 3D DVDs, players and programs.

That has all changed as we left the noughties and entered this new decade. Amazon have jumped aboard for the ride and now offer real 3d dvd movies, documentaries, series and music dvd that can be played on either regular 2D or new 3D Blu Ray DVD players. They also recently had a small batch of the first ever 3D Blu Ray DVD players, the Samsung BD-C6900. These soon sold out at a price of 9 and at the time of writing no announcement has been made regarding when they will be back in stock. One good point on the subject of 3d dvd players is that the Sony PS3 is able to play 3D discs with a simple firmware update.

The broadcaster BSkyB is also getting in on the action early. Their recent broadcast of the Arsenal-Manchester United game in 3D, played to a small group of nine pubs across the UK and Eire, took the industry by surprise. This followed their announcement that a full 3D channel will be available, to existing and new Sky HD+ box subscribers, from April of this year. ESPN are due to launch their 3D channel in June and broadcast some 80 or more sports events in 3D and the Discovery/Imax/Sony partnership will have their own version before the year is out.

So you can see, this time round, with the promise of real 3d dvd and broadcasts along side of a 3d dvd player and 3d tv systems to watch it all on. Yes, 3D is here to change the way we watch TV for ever.

While it seems that 3D movies are a new technological invention that has only been available to filmmakers in recent years, it has actually been around for a long time. The first patent for a 3D movie process was filed in Great Britain as far back as 1890, and the first movie viewed by a paying audience was shown back in 1922. In the 1950s, 3D movies became popular for awhile, but remained a novelty. In the early 1980s, movie makers again tried to sell the 3D technology, and this time reached more mainstreams producers. Titles such as Jaws 3D and Friday the 13th 3D showed some success. New, computerized cameras and processes led to the latest 3D craze, but these processes did little more than expand on the already-existing way 3D movies are filmed.

Before answering the question on how are 3D movies filmed, it must be noted that not all of todays three dimensional movies are filmed directly in 3D. Some of them were filmed with standard cameras, and then they are sent to a third-party production company that converts the movies into the third dimension. The three dimensional effects in post-production movies are generally not as good as movies that are originally shot in three dimensions. In many instances, the effect seems forced, subdued, or otherwise unnatural.

The best 3D movies are shot with special cameras that were invented for just that purpose. The most advanced of these cameras is the Sony 3D camera system developed by James Cameron and Vince Pace in conjunction with Sony. Cameron used the cameras to produce two documentaries before using them to film what is considered the greatest 3D movie of all-time, Avatar.

In gaining an understanding of how are 3D movies filmed, it is important to understand how 3D works. Three dimensional vision works on the principle of human binocular vision, the use of two eyes to create one image in the brain. Having two eyes that work together in this way is what allows people to perceive depth. The brain uses the triangulation between each eye and an outside object or point to determine how far away the object is. Because movie screens are flat, all of the images are the same distance away, so a system is used to trick the eyes into seeing two different images.

Older 3D movies were made with two cameras that recorded one image in red and the same image from a different perspective in blue or green. The images were then projected onto the screen using two cameras in synchronization. Viewers had to wear special glasses with red and green or blue tinted lenses so each eye could see only one of the projected images, creating a 3D effect.

Today’s 3D cameras use two lenses to capture two sets of images, but instead of colored filters, the images are differentiated by vertical and horizontal or opposing diagonal polarization. The movies are projected using a standard projector with a special lens that projects the two polarizations used. Viewers still have to wear special glasses, but they are no longer colored. The lenses filter each of the differently-polarized images to each eye, producing the 3D effect.
